Although Greenland (Kalaallit Nunaat) is today an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, the island has repeatedly drawn the attention of the United States, which has tried to buy, acquire or take over Greenland many times in the last 157 years or so. From the 19th century through the Cold War and into the 21st century, American leaders have viewed Greenland as a strategically valuable Arctic outpost.
